Posing as the main icon of Epcot Center, Spaceship Earth was inspired by the works of R. Buckminster Fuller, who studied how technology could improve daily lives. Spaceship Earth was ultimately conceived by legendary, Disney Imagineers like John Hench and Marty Sklar. They envisioned a large geodesic sphere at the entrance to Epcot Center with an attraction inside, telling the story of communication.
Spaceship Earth was opened, along with the park in 1982. Architectural design was done by the Wallace Floyd Design Group with engineering services by SGH. Standing at 180 feet tall with a 165ft diameter, it took over 26 months to build.
